In order to make clear float glass non-transparent, its surface is etched either with coarse sand, acid or vinyl film. It can either be made fully non-transparent or partially non-transparent leaving the desired areas clear so as to give effect of a design, logo or text pattern.
Frosting with sand is the cheapest option but the disadvantage as compared to acid frosting is that the surface becomes coarse to touch and tends to attract dust and fingerprints which are difficult to clean. Vinyl film tends to peel off but is the best option when the glass has already been installed and is difficult and costly to remove and take it to the workshop for frosting.
